Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The two main forms are type 1 and type 2.

The disease's significance lies largely in its complications. Chronic hyperglycemia damages small vessels — retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy — and accelerates large-vessel atherosclerosis, raising the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. These microvascular and macrovascular sequelae make diabetes a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, and amputation.
