Kinesiology

Also known as: human kinetics, study of human movement

Kinesiology is the study of human movement, combining anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics to explain how muscles, bones, and joints produce motion. It underpins fields including massage therapy, athletic training, physical therapy, and strength and conditioning.

Kinesiology analyzes how the body moves. It draws on musculoskeletal anatomy to identify the structures involved, physiology to explain how muscles generate force, and biomechanics to describe the mechanical principles — levers, torque, and force vectors — that govern the resulting motion. A kinesiologic description of any exercise or clinical movement names the joint, the plane of motion, the action, and the muscles responsible for producing and controlling it.

Movement is described in three cardinal planes. The sagittal plane hosts flexion and extension, the frontal plane hosts abduction and adduction, and the transverse plane hosts rotation. Muscles are then classified by their role in a given movement: the agonist (prime mover) produces the action, the antagonist opposes it, synergists assist, and stabilizers fix the origin so force transfers efficiently. The same muscle changes role depending on the movement — the biceps brachii is the agonist in elbow flexion and the antagonist during elbow extension.

Muscle actions are also classified by what happens to muscle length under load. Concentric actions shorten the muscle and accelerate a load, eccentric actions lengthen it under tension and decelerate a load, and isometric actions produce force with no change in length. Eccentric actions generate the highest force and are the primary source of delayed-onset muscle soreness, which is why they receive attention in both rehabilitation and program design.

For practitioners, kinesiology is the vocabulary of the job: it lets a therapist locate the muscle responsible for a restricted movement and lets a coach select an exercise that loads a target action. The MBLEx devotes a full content area to kinesiology, testing muscle origins, insertions, actions, and joint movements. The CSCS applies the same principles to exercise technique and program design, and expects candidates to understand them alongside the professional and legal responsibilities of running a facility.
