NSCA training load chart

The NSCA training load chart is a reference table that pairs a percentage of an athlete's one-repetition maximum with the number of repetitions that percentage typically allows. Coaches use it to convert a tested 1RM into working loads and to estimate a 1RM from a multiple-repetition set.
The chart formalises a simple inverse relationship: the heavier the load relative to an athlete's one-repetition maximum (1RM), the fewer repetitions that athlete can complete. At 100% of 1RM only a single repetition is possible. Around 87% an athlete can typically manage about five repetitions, and around 75% about ten. The percentages are population averages drawn from testing data, not exact individual constants.
The chart is used in two directions. Going forward, a coach who has tested an athlete's 1RM multiplies it by the percentage matching the prescribed repetition target to set the working load — an athlete with a 300 lb back squat 1RM assigned sets of five would train near 87%, or roughly 260 lb. Going backward, a coach who does not want to perform a maximal test can have the athlete complete a multiple-RM set and use the corresponding percentage to estimate 1RM.
Load selection follows the training goal. Loads at or above roughly 85% of 1RM for six or fewer repetitions emphasise maximal strength; loads of about 67% to 85% for six to twelve repetitions emphasise hypertrophy; loads at or below about 67% for twelve or more repetitions emphasise muscular endurance. Power training is prescribed differently, with the load chosen so it can be moved at high velocity rather than to failure — commonly around 80% to 90% of 1RM for single-effort events and 75% to 85% for multiple-effort events.
Two limitations matter in practice. The percentage-to-repetition relationship holds best for large multi-joint exercises such as the squat, bench press, and deadlift, and is less reliable for single-joint assistance work, where trained athletes often exceed the predicted repetitions. Accuracy also degrades as repetitions climb, so estimates from high-repetition sets are rougher than those from sets of five or fewer.
The NSCA's Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam expects fluency here. Program design questions routinely give a 1RM and a repetition target and ask for the training load, or give a completed multiple-RM set and ask for the estimated 1RM, so both directions of the chart and the goal-based load ranges are worth memorising.
