Signal detection theory explains how people decide whether a faint stimulus is present amid background noise. It separates true sensory sensitivity from the decision criteria and expectations that bias a person's responses.

Signal detection theory describes perception under uncertainty: how an observer decides whether a weak stimulus — a faint sound, a dim light, a shadow on an X-ray — is actually there. Unlike classical threshold models, it recognizes that detection depends not only on the strength of the signal against background noise, but also on the observer's expectations, motivation, and the costs of being wrong.

Every detection trial has four possible outcomes. When the signal is present, the observer can report it (a hit) or fail to (a miss). When the signal is absent, the observer can wrongly report it (a false alarm) or correctly stay silent (a correct rejection).
