ACCA Strategic Professional is the final stage of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) certification exams. It includes two mandatory Essentials exams and two Options tests covering financial reporting, business leadership, performance management, taxation, and other advanced topics. These tests prepare candidates for senior-level roles and full ACCA membership, enabling them to eventually pursue leadership positions, start their own practices, or establish consultancies.
This level targets experienced accountants who have completed or are exempt from the previous ACCA levels (Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills). Successfully passing all four Strategic Professional assessments and completing 36 months of professional requirements allows candidates to achieve full ACCA membership, a process which may involve up to 13 exams in total, plus an ethics module. While widely recognized as a respected accounting credential worldwide, the ACCA credential is designed to prepare candidates for a range of roles and responsibilities in the financial world.

The ACCA certification: Explained
The ACCA is an internationally recognized accounting qualification covering both public practice and private management accounting. The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), which offers this certification, is a globally accredited body.
To achieve full ACCA membership, you must:
- Attain minimum qualifying scores in mathematics, English, or other subjects during secondary education, or fulfill other education requirements (such as matriculation in an undergraduate program).
- Pay the £89 registration and £140 annual subscription fee, plus any applicable exam fees.
- Complete the designated ACCA qualification levels and required exams.
- Accumulate 36 months (three years) of relevant supervised accounting or finance experience, and complete nine performance objectives, as part of the ACCA Practical Experience Requirement.
- Complete a specialized ethics and professional skills module developed by ACCA.
The ACCA has members and students in 179 countries and is widely used as a certification for practicing accounting across a range of industries. Accounting professionals in the U.S. may be curious about the value of an ACCA qualification, given the number of domestic certifications and licenses available. In fact, an ACCA can open access to international accounting opportunities, especially when combined with a CPA, CMA, or other U.S.-based professional license.
The complete ACCA qualification consists of 13 exams in total, though the number you actually sit is reduced by any exemptions you qualify for based on your educational and professional background. Altogether, these exams guide candidates from foundational accounting and business principles to advanced topics such as auditing, strategic planning, and regulatory compliance.
This curriculum equips ACCA-qualified professionals with skills suited for a wide range of accounting and finance roles across industries. The final milestone is passing the Strategic Professional exams, which sets accounting professionals up to work across large firms, financial institutions, small businesses, government, education, and financial policy groups.
What do you need before Strategic Professional? (Prerequisites)
Before reaching Strategic Professional, candidates complete the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels (or qualify for exemptions), and ideally the EPSM.
The ACCA’s three Applied Knowledge exams, the most common starting point for students or early-career professionals, cover the core principles of accounting and business:
- Business and Technology (BT): Introduces the basics of accounting, governance, ethics, and the external business environment.
- Management Accounting (MA): Covers budgeting, cost accounting, and performance management.
- Financial Accounting (FA): Focuses on financial reporting, bookkeeping, balance sheets, and financial statements.
These flexible tests are administered online and can be taken on demand, so you do not need to register by a certain date. Note that U.S. candidates take these tests remotely, from home, rather than at a test center.
ACCA Applied Skills
There are six Applied Skills exams that build on the first level and focus on key technical skills. Unlike Applied Knowledge, most Applied Skills exams are administered during specific months (March, June, September, and December); Corporate and Business Law is on demand. Candidates must book by the standard entry deadline, about five weeks before the exam week (2 November for the December 2026 session); U.S. candidates sit remotely, and remote exams don’t accept late entries. The six exams are:
- Corporate and Business Law (LW): Examines legal principles and introduces concepts in contract, company, and employment law.
- Performance Management (PM): Develops familiarity with cost and management accounting techniques for decision-making and performance evaluation.
- Taxation (TX): Covers tax systems, particularly those in the UK, including personal, corporate, and VAT taxes.
- Financial Reporting (FR): Focuses on financial reporting, including International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). (Note that in the U.S., GAAP is generally used.)
- Audit and Assurance (AA): Enhances knowledge of auditing processes, assurance engagements, and compliance.
- Financial Management (FM): Covers business finance, risk management, and investment appraisal.
Like the Applied Knowledge exams, qualified accounting professionals can pay to be exempt from these tests.
ACCA Ethics and Professional Skills module
Finally, the ACCA Ethics and Professional Skills module (EPSM) is a mandatory course that develops candidates’ communication, leadership, and ethical decision-making skills. You must complete the EPSM to become an ACCA member, and ACCA strongly advises finishing it before you attempt any Strategic Professional exam: students who do have a 25% better success rate.

ACCA Strategic Professional exams: Essentials and Options
The final ACCA level, Strategic Professional, consists of four exams designed to prepare candidates for modern accounting roles. Two are mandatory, and the final two are chosen by the candidate from four Options, depending on their area of specialization. Together, they combine advanced technical skills, real-world application, and specialization options.
Like the Applied Skills tests, these are session-based exams administered during the ACCA testing periods (March, June, September, and December). Candidates register for ACCA exams in advance; most countries use exam centers, while U.S. candidates sit them remotely:
- Strategic Business Reporting (SBR): A case-study-based test focused on advanced financial reporting, including applying IFRS, consolidations, and ethical considerations.
- Strategic Business Leader (SBL): Assesses strategic leadership, governance, risk management, and business decision-making.
Candidates then choose two of the four Options exams:
- Advanced Financial Management (AFM): Develops expertise in strategic financial management.
- Advanced Performance Management (APM): Expands business strategy and performance-evaluation skills.
- Advanced Taxation (ATX): Enhances skills in complex taxation issues.
- Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA): Prepares accountants for high-level auditing and assurance responsibilities.
Note that June 2027 is the final sitting of the current Strategic Professional exams. From September 2027, ACCA’s redesigned qualification requires two core exams and one Options exam instead of two.
The Strategic Professional papers are among the most demanding in the qualification, designed to develop advanced technical skills and sharp ethical judgment. Completing this level can also count toward a separate, internationally recognized Master of Science (MSc), for example, the University of London MSc in Professional Accountancy, though the MSc requires additional modules and a capstone project rather than being awarded automatically.
The Options exams let you specialize in a chosen sector, building on the broad, cross-sector technical foundation the ACCA provides.
Here’s a breakdown of the ACCA Strategic Professional exams to help you plan your study schedule. Unlike the Applied Knowledge papers (objective questions only) and the Applied Skills papers (objective and constructed-response questions), Strategic Professional papers are all multi-step, case-study, and extended-response items:

Achieving the Strategic Professional level allows accountants to qualify as full ACCA members, recognized worldwide as strategic, forward-thinking accountants. From here, accountants can advance their careers to achieve senior-level positions, manage companies, open their own practices, or rise to high levels at regulatory agencies. Typically, completing all four exams takes 12 to 18 months, depending on your background and the preparation needed for each exam. Some employers pay exam fees or offer study support, so it’s worth asking yours before you register.
ACCA Strategic Professional scoring
ACCA Strategic Professional scoring is straightforward: all exams are marked out of 100, and test-takers need 50% to pass.
Most exams are divided into two sections. Sections A and B consist of multi-step, extended-response questions that each carry several marks. SBL, however, is a single case study with related tasks. In every case, all questions are worth 100 marks (points), and 50 are required to succeed.
ACCA Strategic Professional pass rates
Data from recent sessions shows that the ACCA Strategic Professional exams have pass rates between 38% and 52% in recent sessions, showcasing their difficulty:
| ACCA exam session | SBL | SBR | AFM | APM | ATX | AAA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 2026 | 51% | 47% | 47% | 42% | 47% | 39% |
| Mar 2026 | 52% | 50% | 44% | 40% | 50% | 42% |
| Dec 2025 | 50% | 48% | 45% | 41% | 50% | 38% |
While aiming for a score of 50% may seem attainable, these tests are not simple, and passing requires a great deal of study and accounting expertise. Completing these exams demonstrates to employers that you possess the skills and knowledge of senior-level professionals.
Do ACCA exams expire?
It depends on the exam: entry- and mid-level exams do not expire. However, a “seven-year rule” applies to Strategic Professional tests: candidates have seven years to pass all Strategic Professional exams after passing their first one. This rule ensures that employers can be confident that students have the most relevant, up-to-date knowledge as they reach senior levels.

Are ACCA exams open-book?
Not currently: ACCA exams are closed-book. Some exams come with reference material on screen: AFM includes a formulae sheet and maths tables, APM includes present value and annuity tables, and ATX includes tax rates and allowances, so you can focus on applying information in context rather than memorizing it. From September 2027, when ACCA’s redesigned Strategic Professional exams begin, ACCA will provide permitted reference materials for candidates to use during the exams.
How to prepare for the ACCA Strategic Professional exams
Studying for the ACCA qualification is flexible. Candidates can choose from:
- Distance learning
- Online revision via ACCA-X, the learning platform
- Revision courses
- Full-time courses
- Part-time/weekend courses
The ACCA partners with learning companies and educational institutions worldwide, including several U.S.-based university partnerships. Knowing about these partnerships is helpful both for domestic ACCA candidates and those moving to the U.S. from abroad.
ACCA Strategic Professional for U.S. candidates
As mentioned above, accountants who meet certain prerequisites can take an accelerated path to ACCA certification by starting with the Strategic Professional exams. This offers international professionals a streamlined route to full ACCA certification, even though there is no formal agreement between the ACCA and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) at this time. U.S. candidates with an accounting degree or professional qualification may be exempt from some or all of the nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams; ACCA’s Exemptions calculator shows what you can claim. No exemptions are given for Strategic Professional. This allows U.S.-based accountants to expand their options, enabling them to work at international companies or pursue new positions abroad.
