Passing the Series 66, or the Uniform Combined State Law Examination, represents a major milestone for financial professionals. When paired with the Series 7, the Series 66 enables candidates to act as both securities sales agents and Investment Advisor Representatives (IARs) in their chosen state.

As one of the broadest North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) licensing exams, the Series 66 covers both securities regulations and investment advisory fundamentals, comprising 100 questions that must be answered within 150 minutes. Studying for the Series 66 requires dedication and focus, and choosing the right Series 66 prep course can mean the difference between passing the test on your first try or signing up for a retake.

To help you make an informed decision on your preparation strategy, we've compiled a list of test prep vendors who offer Series 66 courses, including Achievable, Kaplan, Securities Training Corporation (STC), and Knopman Marks, using their marketing language to highlight each provider's features. The Achievable method emphasizes self-directed learning and consistent review, making it ideal for independent learners. The only notable limitation is the lack of live or in-person instruction; however, the platform's active discussion forum connects test-takers and creates a supportive virtual learning community.

Without a doubt, I found Achievable to be the best provider… they really simplify the material so it's concise and easy to digest. After each chapter, I really felt like I had a strong grasp on what I just read. I used their content for the SIE, the 7, and the 66.

I appreciate how smooth everything is, from the textbook to videos to the quizzes. Just smooth and intuitive. I plan to have several advisors on my team use you guys.

Bottom line: Combining in-depth content, clear guidance, and powerful study aids, Achievable's Series 66 course delivers unmatched quality and value, setting a superior standard for exam prep.

Kaplan's Series 66 prep course is a well-established choice for financial professionals seeking to expand their credentials. The program features a comprehensive License Exam Manual, available in both print and digital formats, along with SecuritiesPro™ QBank practice questions, a full-length simulated exam, and progress-tracking analytics. Depending on the chosen package, learners can also access live or on-demand video instruction, InstructorLink support, and checkpoint exams to gauge their readiness.

Kaplan's Series 66 program offers four package levels, with the Premium Live option serving as the top tier at just under $300. The Basic package starts at $149 and includes exam guidance, the QBank, one full-length practice exam, and core study materials. All Kaplan Series 66 packages include five months of online access, with an optional five-month extension available for $49.

Overall, Kaplan's Series 66 program remains a reliable and adaptable choice for candidates seeking inclusive content coverage and flexible study options. Its challenging practice questions and exams push learners to think critically and often make the real exam seem easier.

However, this high level of difficulty can be a double-edged sword: some learners reported that their Kaplan scores underestimated their actual readiness for the real test. Others felt that Kaplan's question wording and the scope of topics covered (for example, a large emphasis on math) were not fully reflective of what's commonly seen on the Series 66. Test-takers recommend drilling down on specific sections of Kaplan's book, in particular those on regulatory and legal practices, for more focused preparation.

The Kaplan test bank is so much harder than the actual test. If you're getting around 80% on Kaplan, you should be fine… the one difference is the test has some wording a little different than Kaplan uses, but generally the same.

I passed in January using Kaplan. On the simulated exams, I was scoring 74-84, with the majority of tests at 76. I did not take the Kaplan Mastery as I thought it would be so hard it would destroy my confidence.

Bottom line: For Series 66 candidates looking to challenge themselves, Kaplan's materials are regarded as especially thorough. Be aware that practice questions and exams often underestimate exam readiness.

  • All of STC's Series 66 courses come with the basics (chapter quizzes, full-length practice exams, etc.). Higher-tier packages add extra practice tests, study aids, and on-demand or live classes.

STC's Series 66 programs offer well-crafted Series 66 study manuals, chapter quizzes, full-length practice exams, and customizable topic-specific tests (based on the selected package). Every package includes both printed and digital study materials, access to the online platform, and instructor hotline support. Higher-tier packages add Series 66 flashcards, recorded video lectures, and the option to attend live or virtual classes. Their courses are best suited for traditional learners who prefer guided instruction, conventionally written materials, and direct instructor assistance.

The Premier Plus STC Series 66 package also includes the Progress and Green Light exams, which help candidates reinforce their knowledge and readiness. Online lectures and real-time coaching can also be purchased separately for $171. Many firms rely on STC to train entry-level professionals for licensing exams. However, its learning methods and materials can feel somewhat rigid and less dynamic than those of more modern providers. Like Kaplan, test-takers have noted that the wording of their practice questions can be more convoluted than necessary.

I felt that STC more than prepared me for the real exam. The real exam was much more straightforward than anything STC threw at me in the practice exams.

I was nervous because of how hard STC's [questions] were worded.

Bottom line: STC is a trusted name in FINRA licensing prep, offering reliable, no-frills products and a direct line to instructors. However, its Series 66 course lacks some of the features found in newer programs, and some students describe the materials as denser and more difficult than the exam itself.

Knopman Marks Financial Training, a New York-based institution with over 30 years of expertise, offers a faculty-guided approach to FINRA exam preparation. The Knopman Series 66 program provides a structured, high-support learning experience that includes both print and digital textbooks, expert-led video lectures, digital flashcards, and a customizable question bank. Students also benefit from exclusive tools, such as Key Concepts resources, preset benchmark exams, and analytics-driven performance insights, which help identify and strengthen areas of improvement.

All Knopman Series 66 students receive a personalized onboarding call to kick off their course, followed by regular check-ins and automated reminders designed to keep them on track. Their offerings range from supported independent study options to enrollment in full-length live classes.

Knopman Marks caters to aspiring advisors who thrive on a structured, guided approach to exam preparation, and is another commonly used test prep provider at brokerages and advisory firms. Upgrading to the "All Access Pass" provides access to live instruction, as well as strategy sessions and interactive review classes led by faculty. Candidates living in the New York City area can take full advantage of Knopman's in-person classes. Those who prefer a traditional, academically rigorous framework will likely find Knopman's methodical style and teacher-led options well-suited to their needs.

Starting at nearly $400, Knopman is the most expensive Series 66 course among leading providers, and their prices may be well out of reach for independent learners. While praised for its comprehensiveness and detail, Knopman's content can be more intensive and wide-ranging than what's typically encountered on the Series 66 exam. Candidates also took issue with the fact that there are no options to generate custom exams outside of the quiz question bank.

Knopman has amazing videos and supplements, but I feel like the book they give is just so massive with so much stuff you will never actually see on the exam.

Knopman's question bank doesn't have a simulated exams button… so I would just select all categories and choose 110 questions like the real exam, but I'm not sure if this is a viable substitution.

Bottom line: Knopman Marks' Series 66 course is by far the most expensive on the list, but the investment may be worthwhile for those seeking structured classes taught by expert faculty. However, self-studiers have described Knopman's materials as less approachable and customizable than others.
