MBLEx FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx).

What is the MBLEx application process?
The MBLEx is an entry-level licensing exam for massage therapists. To take the exam and apply for licensure, candidates must:
- Read through the MBLEx Candidate Handbook, which provides important information on eligibility requirements, exam content, fees, scheduling, and results.
- Create an exam account online through the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) website, where you will be able to track the status of your application throughout the process.
- Provide proof of current enrollment in or graduation from an approved massage therapy education program that covers all subject areas of the MBLEx Content Outline.
- Submit a complete MBLEx application with the required fee ($265). Verify all information if you have not received any confirmation within 5 business days.
- Receive your Authorization to Test (ATT) once approved. While the MBLEx is offered year-round, you must take the exam within the date range specified in the ATT. Important: The identification you use to submit the application must match the one you present at the test center.
- Schedule and take your MBLEx appointment at an authorized Pearson VUE Professional Center. Your results will be available immediately.
After passing the MBLEx, you will need to apply for a license in the state or territory where you plan on working. This typically requires completing a minimum amount of education hours and paying additional licensing fees.

How long does it take to become a massage therapist?
The amount of time it takes to become a LMT (licensed massage therapist) varies. Each state mandates a different number of educational hours (usually between 500 and 1,000), which are often completed over several weeks. For most people, it takes anywhere from six months to two years to become fully licensed, including the time required to complete educational prerequisites, testing, and state registration.

Is the MBLEx required in every state?
No: the MBLEx is required in most (43) states, the District of Columbia, and the territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
New York and Hawaii require state licensure but administer their own exams separate from the MBLEx. California offers a voluntary certification, Vermont requires therapists to register with the state with no mandated exam, and Kansas, Minnesota, and Wyoming have no statewide requirements, with municipalities setting regulations for the profession.

What's the difference between the NCBTMB vs MBLEx?
The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) is an independent credentialing organization that offers an optional, higher-level certification for massage therapy professionals. Passing the MBLEx, on the other hand, is a requirement to practice massage therapy in most states, as it grants access to mandatory licensing.
The NCBTMB exam consists of 140 questions, compared to 100 on the MBLEx, and covers many of the same domains but in greater detail. Many therapists choose to take the NCBTMB to advance their careers, even if it is not a requirement like the MBLEx.

Is the MBLEx hard?
With a first-time pass rate of 70%, the MBLEx can be difficult due to its length (110 minutes), adaptive format (where the difficulty level increases as the exam progresses), and the breadth of information candidates must study. Many candidates find the MBLEx moderately challenging for its wide scope of content, spanning anatomy, bodywork and massage modalities, ethical standards, business principles, and more. Luckily, the exam is entirely multiple choice and focuses on straightforward material and concepts. Following the MBLEx Candidate Handbook and dedicating intentional study time will ensure you cover the material needed and perfect your test-taking skills.

Can I take the MBLEx exam online?
No, you cannot take the MBLEx remotely. The MBLEx is a computer-based exam administered exclusively at testing centers. If you require accommodations for your testing appointment, you can specify this during your application process.

Where can I find an MBLEx testing center near me?
The MBLEx is offered at authorized Pearson VUE Professional Centers nationwide. You can use the Test Center Locator tool to find the nearest testing center. Please note that you must receive FSMTB approval to take the exam before registering.
