Cognitive development is the growth of thinking abilities — perception, memory, language, reasoning, and problem-solving — across the lifespan. Piaget's stage theory and Vygotsky's sociocultural theory are the field's foundational frameworks.

The most influential framework is Jean Piaget's stage theory. Piaget proposed that children actively construct understanding through four stages: sensorimotor (birth to about 2 years), when infants learn through senses and actions and achieve object permanence; preoperational (about 2 to 7), marked by symbolic thought but also egocentrism and lack of conservation; concrete operational (about 7 to 11), when logical thinking about concrete objects and conservation emerge; and formal operational (about 12 and up), bringing abstract and hypothetical reasoning. Children adapt through assimilation (fitting new information into existing schemas) and accommodation (revising schemas to fit new information).

Lev Vygotsky offered a complementary sociocultural view: cognitive growth is driven by social interaction and culture, with learning occurring in the zone of proximal development — the gap between what a child can do alone and with guidance. In later life, fluid abilities like processing speed tend to decline while crystallized knowledge, such as vocabulary, remains stable or grows; distinguishing normal aging from pathological decline is a key clinical skill.
