Cranial nerves
The cranial nerves are twelve pairs of nerves that arise directly from the brain and brainstem rather than the spinal cord. They carry sensory and motor signals for the head and neck, including smell, vision, facial movement, hearing, and swallowing.

The mixed nerves — trigeminal (facial sensation and chewing), facial (facial expression and taste), glossopharyngeal (swallowing and taste), and vagus — carry both kinds of fibers. The vagus is the outlier in territory, wandering beyond the head and neck to provide parasympathetic innervation to the heart, lungs, and much of the digestive tract.
Most cranial nerves attach to the brainstem — III and IV to the midbrain, V through VIII near the pons, and IX through XII at the medulla — so clinicians localize brainstem lesions by which nerve functions are lost. A drooping eyelid, asymmetric smile, hoarse voice, or deviated tongue each points to a specific nerve.
Cranial nerves are tested across health-science exams: the USMLE Step 1 emphasizes nuclei, pathways, and lesion localization; the MBLEx tests names, numbers, and basic functions within the nervous system content area; and the NPTE-PTA covers them within the peripheral nervous system.
