Drive theory holds that performance rises in direct proportion to arousal, so that higher arousal amplifies whatever response an athlete has best learned. In its motivational form, it explains behavior as an attempt to reduce internal drives and restore homeostasis.
Drive theory, developed by Clark Hull, describes a linear relationship between arousal and performance: as arousal increases, performance increases as well. The critical qualifier is skill level. Arousal magnifies the athlete's dominant response — the movement pattern most strongly learned — so a well-practiced expert performs better under high arousal, while a beginner whose dominant response is still flawed performs worse.
A sprinter with years of technical work will typically produce a faster start in a charged competitive environment. A novice lifter attempting a complex movement under the same conditions is more likely to revert to poor mechanics, because arousal strengthens the habit that is already there rather than creating a better one.
In its broader psychological form, drive theory explains motivation through drive reduction. A physiological need, such as dehydration, creates an internal state of tension called a drive, and behavior is directed at reducing that tension and returning the body to homeostasis. This account handles biological motives well but struggles with behaviors that increase arousal rather than reduce it, such as curiosity or thrill seeking.
