Classical conditioning

Classical conditioning is a form of learning in which a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a stimulus that naturally triggers a response, until the neutral stimulus alone elicits that response. Pavlov's dogs salivating to a bell is the classic example.
Classical conditioning is associative learning in which an organism comes to respond to a previously neutral stimulus because it has been repeatedly paired with a stimulus that naturally produces the response. Ivan Pavlov demonstrated it with dogs: food naturally causes salivation, and after a bell repeatedly preceded the food, the bell alone made the dogs salivate.
The terminology maps directly onto that experiment. The unconditioned stimulus (US) — food — naturally elicits the unconditioned response (UR) — salivation. The bell begins as a neutral stimulus; through pairing it becomes the conditioned stimulus (CS), and the salivation it now triggers is the conditioned response (CR). Learning the association is called acquisition, and conditioning works best when the CS slightly precedes the US.
Several phenomena follow. Extinction occurs when the CS is presented repeatedly without the US and the CR fades — though spontaneous recovery can briefly revive it after a rest. Generalization means similar stimuli also trigger the CR (a dog salivating to a similar tone); discrimination means the organism learns to respond only to the exact CS. Classical conditioning explains real-world learning like taste aversions, phobias, and conditioned emotional responses — Watson's Little Albert experiment famously conditioned fear of a white rat.
Both the MCAT and the AP Psychology exam test classical conditioning in depth: labeling US, UR, CS, and CR in a scenario, distinguishing it from operant conditioning (which involves consequences of voluntary behavior rather than paired stimuli), and applying acquisition, extinction, generalization, and discrimination to novel examples.
