Innate immunity

Innate immunity is the body's built-in, first-line defense system that responds to pathogens within minutes to hours. It is nonspecific and has no memory, relying on barriers, phagocytes, natural killer cells, complement, and inflammation rather than antigen-specific recognition.

Innate immunity is the arm of the immune system you are born with — a fast, nonspecific defense that attacks anything it recognizes as foreign. It responds within minutes to hours, uses receptors encoded in the germline rather than generated by gene rearrangement, and produces the same response no matter how many times it meets the same pathogen: innate immunity has no immunologic memory.

Its components operate in layers. Physical and chemical barriers — skin, mucous membranes, stomach acid, and antimicrobial secretions — block entry. If pathogens get through, cellular defenders take over: neutrophils and macrophages phagocytose microbes, dendritic cells capture antigen, and natural killer (NK) cells destroy virus-infected and abnormal cells. Soluble defenses include the complement system, which opsonizes pathogens and lyses membranes, plus cytokines and acute-phase proteins that drive fever and inflammation.

Innate cells identify targets by detecting broad molecular signatures. Pattern recognition receptors, such as Toll-like receptors, bind pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) — conserved microbial structures like lipopolysaccharide and flagellin that human cells lack. This is the key contrast with adaptive immunity, whose T and B lymphocytes recognize specific antigens, take days to mobilize on first exposure, and improve with memory. The two systems are linked: innate antigen-presenting cells activate the adaptive response.
