CIMA Cert BA FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting exams.

How long does it take to earn a Certificate in Business Accounting?
The Certificate in Business Accounting (Cert BA) exams (BA1 through BA4) are moderately challenging but fast-paced assessments that often require at least six to eight weeks of preparation per exam. Overall, most candidates spend between six months and one year completing the full set, depending on their schedule and prior familiarity with the material.
There is no waiting period between exams, allowing candidates to create their own streamlined or flexible exam schedule.

How long does it take to earn a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA)?
Becoming a CGMA typically takes three to four years, although the exact timeline varies by candidate. After earning the Certificate in Business Accounting (or an equivalent qualification), candidates must complete three additional levels (Operational, Management, and Strategic) to achieve the CGMA Professional Qualification.
Advancing through each level requires passing three Objective Tests (OTs) and one Case Study (CS) exam. On average, each level takes about 1 year to complete, with candidates dedicating eight to 11 weeks of study per Objective Test and approximately 2 to 3 months preparing for each Case Study. Three years of work experience are also required to be officially designated, and many candidates work full-time while completing each step.
Each level also serves as a standalone credential. Candidates may choose to complete all levels and case studies or stop after earning the Operational or Management qualification. While stopping early can save time, it may also limit long-term earning potential and career advancement opportunities.
Note: U.S. accountants who hold a CPA designation have an accelerated pathway to the CGMA. They are only required to pass the capstone exam, which is identical to the Strategic Case Study, to earn the credential.

Is the CGMA only recognized in the UK?
The CGMA uses a standardized, global curriculum and is recognized in more than 150 countries worldwide, including the U.S., Canada, India, Australia, and numerous nations throughout the Middle East. The designation is jointly administered by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), based in the UK, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Can I take the CGMA exams in any order?
Yes and no. Within each level of the CGMA certification (Certificate in Business Accounting, Operational, Management, and Strategic), you may take the Objective Tests and Case Study exams in any order. However, you must complete all required exams at a given level before progressing to the next one.

Is a CGMA worth it?
The CGMA is a globally recognized credential, making it a strong option for accountants seeking international career opportunities. While well-established, country-specific designations, such as the CMA in the U.S., carry significant prestige, the CGMA is particularly valuable for professionals who want to specialize in management accounting on a global scale.
The Cert BA provides an accessible pathway to the CGMA designation and advanced accounting roles, with no formal education or work experience requirements to register for the introductory exams.

Is the Certificate in Business Accounting certification worth it on its own?
The Cert BA serves as both a standalone credential and an entry route to more advanced qualifications. It is an excellent choice for early-career professionals, career changers, or anyone seeking to build a solid foundation in business and accounting principles. While the certificate can strengthen qualifications for entry-level roles, more advanced chartered licenses are required for senior-level positions.

When will I receive my Cert BA scores?
Certificate in Business Accounting exam results are available immediately after completing the online test. At the end of the exam, you will receive a provisional result of either "pass" or "fail," followed by official confirmation within 48 hours.

Can I retake the Certificate in Business Accounting exam?
Yes, you may retake any Cert BA exam at any time, with no limit on the number of attempts. However, you must pay the exam fee each time you sit for the test.

What is the CGMA Financial Leadership Program (FLP)?
The CGMA FLP is CIMA's guided-learning path through the CGMA Professional Qualification. The program features lecture-based learning and continuous assessment at each level, culminating in the Case Study exams. This option allows candidates to complete their CGMA requirements without taking Operational Tests.

How do I maintain my Certificate in Business Accounting credential?
Once you pass all required modules, you will earn the Cert BA credential and are not required to pay additional maintenance fees or complete continuing education to keep the certification active.
However, you must maintain an active AICPA/CIMA membership while progressing through the exam process. The first year of membership is included at no additional cost after paying the one-time registration fee.
