Who is the FE exam for?

The first thing to know about the FE exam is that you need to meet special eligibility requirements to take it. It is generally taken by:

  • Engineering candidates who have recently graduated from an accredited four-year undergraduate program
  • Candidates who are nearing graduation from accredited colleges
  • Candidates who graduated from accredited programs but have spent time in the workforce as unlicensed engineers

While the exam certifies U.S.-based professionals, international students and professionals are also eligible to take the FE exam if their experience is commensurate with U.S. requirements.

In these cases, candidates must pay a fee and register separately with their state board to take the test. Most candidates, though, can sign up directly and, in most states, earn the engineer-in-training (EIT) title if they pass.


How do you register for the FE exam?

If you’re aiming to take the test soon, here’s how to sign up for the FE exam:

  1. First, choose which specialty you plan to pursue. NCEES offers exams in civil, environmental, mechanical, electrical, industrial, chemical, and other disciplines.
  2. Find out if you need pre-approval from your state licensing board, and pay any associated fees.
  3. Create an account or log in to MyNCEES. Make sure your legal name matches your government-issued ID.
  4. Choose your test and the state board you plan to register with.
  5. Pay the $225 registration fee directly to NCEES.
  6. Schedule your test at a local Pearson VUE test center.

If you’re just starting your prep, plan to set aside about three months before your testing date.


When is the FE exam offered?

The FE exam is available year-round, but the exam cycles are divided into quarterly testing windows:

  • January-March
  • April-June
  • July-September
  • October-December

The exam is generally offered Monday through Saturday during these periods, though testing dates can fill up fast. Schedule your exam well in advance to avoid delays.

FE retake policy

If you do not pass the FE exam on your first attempt, you must wait until the next testing period to retake it. You are allowed up to three attempts within a 12-month window, with one attempt per testing window.

If you fail the test, it doesn’t define your career: these exams are challenging, and many successful engineers pass only after multiple attempts. Use your NCEES score report to diagnose the areas you need to improve, and dedicate extra time to practicing them.

What to expect on your FE exam day

On the day of the FE exam, make sure you:

  • Arrive at the testing site at least 30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled appointment
  • Bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport
  • Bring your printed admission ticket or confirmation details on your phone
  • Bring an approved calculator

You can bring your phone, a jacket, and other items, but personal belongings must be placed in a locker before you enter the testing room.

Here’s the breakdown of time spent during your appointment:

  1. Before the test: ID verification, palm scan, and digital signature.
  2. Once the clock begins, you have two minutes to sign a nondisclosure agreement.
  3. Next, you spend eight minutes on a tutorial that explains the testing interface.
  4. The software grants you five hours and 20 minutes of testing time.
  5. There is a 25-minute break halfway through the testing time.

Be sure to pack water and light snacks for your break to stay hydrated and refreshed during this time-intensive exam. Bring a sweater or a light layer to account for temperature variations.


How to study for the FE exam

Preparing for the FE exam involves reviewing engineering concepts, solving math-intensive problems, and taking practice exams that resemble the real test.

  • Allocate a minimum of three months for preparation.
  • Begin with a diagnostic test, preferably after completing your undergraduate studies.
  • Use your initial results to create a study plan that emphasizes the areas where you need the most review.
  • Look for top-tier FE exam resources tailored to your specialty.
  • Cover essential topics such as mathematics, the hard sciences, standard engineering formulas, and professional ethics.
  • Review notes from your engineering classes, but always add materials that match the exam’s phrasing.
  • Approach each problem by considering the context of the concepts: if you have work experience, reflect on how you apply engineering principles in daily practice.
  • Complete realistic practice questions and quizzes.
  • Take full-length exams to better prepare for the real test’s challenges.
  • Practice with an NCEES handbook and an approved calculator, since you’ll have both during the test.

A key part of your preparation should be learning to use the NCEES Reference Handbook effectively as a quick-reference tool rather than a crutch. The handbook contains definitions, equations, and other resources that you won’t need to memorize word-for-word, but you must know how to apply them in context. Many FE exam questions require applying engineering principles to practical situations, so make sure you understand how your coursework relates to real-world applications. You can download the handbook through your MyNCEES account, and you don’t need to register for an exam to access it for practice.


How the FE exam fits into your career path

Here’s an overview of the steps to become a licensed engineer, with each major milestone.

  • Education (four years): Start by earning a four-year bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program. Depending on your state, you may major in engineering or a closely related field such as mathematics or chemistry.
  • First exam (two to three months): Study for and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in your discipline (such as civil or mechanical engineering).
  • Work experience (four years): Accumulate four years of progressive engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer. This stage forms the practical component of the standard engineering track.
  • Second exam (three to six months): Prepare for and pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam, which is required to achieve full professional standing as an engineer.

Candidates typically spend about eight to ten years achieving full professional engineer (PE) licensure, including earning their degree and completing the required professional assessments. This timeline can vary depending on personal study schedules, exam preparation, and how quickly the required experience is acquired.
