Building momentum in finance by passing the SIE

Jean Paul Hernandez Canet is a civil engineering student and finance-focused professional with a strong interest in investing, wealth building, and personal growth. He recently passed the SIE and is continuing his momentum by preparing for the Series 65 as he works toward a long-term career in finance. He is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Passing the SIE is more than simply completing a test: it represents a meaningful first step toward building a career in finance. For many candidates, including Jean Paul, taking the SIE is a way to turn an interest in finance into tangible progress, helping them gain foundational knowledge while opening the door to future opportunities in the financial industry.
Motivation and keeping momentum
I’ve always been into investing, the stock market, and learning how money works, so getting the SIE was my way of actually starting to move in that direction for real. I did not want to just say I was interested in finance. I wanted to back it up and start building momentum.
Learning unfamiliar topics to continue progress
A big reason I took the SIE was that I wanted to keep progressing. I do not like feeling stuck or waiting around. I wanted to do something that would help me move forward and put myself in a better position for future opportunities in finance. Now that I passed the SIE this week, I am already getting started on the Series 65 right away because I want to keep that same momentum going.
The hardest part for me was definitely the topics that, as a normal investor, you really do not come across. Since I already had an interest in the market, some parts felt more natural to me, but there were other sections where I had basically no knowledge or experience at all. That was the biggest challenge. It wasn't necessarily that the material was super hard, but more that some of it was just unfamiliar and not something I had ever really paid attention to before.
Building the right study plan to stay balanced
At the same time, I was balancing school, work, and the gym, so I had to make studying fit into real life. Most of my studying was on the weekends, usually for about 5 hours a day. Then, during the afternoons, after I went to the gym and handled other personal things, I would lock in and study. That was pretty much my system. Nothing crazy, just being disciplined and staying consistent. I think that helped me more than anything because once I got into a rhythm, it stopped feeling so overwhelming.
Achievable helped me a lot through the whole process. I liked that it guided me step by step instead of making everything feel all over the place. That made a big difference because the SIE covers a lot, and without a structure, it can feel like too much.
One thing that really stood out to me was how similar the practice quizzes and exams were to the real test. Honestly, the actual SIE felt even easier than I expected. I think a lot of that came from having already seen so many similar question styles while practicing. So even though it was a lot of hours of studying, it was really worth the pain and effort at the end.
Feeling ready on exam day
Going into test day, I felt a little nervous, but more than anything, I felt ready. By that point, I had put in the time, been consistent, and trusted the work I had done. That helped calm me down. Once I started the exam, it felt familiar, and that gave me even more confidence as I kept going.
Trust the process
If I had to give advice to someone starting the SIE, I would say do not get discouraged just because some topics feel random or unfamiliar at first. That is normal. Especially if you are already into investing, do not assume everything will come naturally, because there are definitely topics on there that are outside of what most people normally look at. Just stay consistent, keep working through it, and trust the process.
Passing this week felt good, not just because I got it done, but because it showed me that I am capable of doing this and continuing to build in this field. For me, it was a real step forward. And now, instead of slowing down, I am going straight into studying for the Series 65 with Achievable as well, so I can keep building from here.
