Few questioned it, let alone scrutinized it with the rigor we'd apply to any other major financial decision. In other words, a major built around today's job market might prepare a student for a world that no longer exists by the time they graduate.
This is where transversal knowledge and skills like critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, written communication, and adaptability show their real advantage. These skills transfer across industries and hold up against technological disruption in ways that narrow technical training simply doesn't. A philosophy graduate who has spent years practicing logical argumentation, or a math major comfortable with abstract problem-solving, often adapts to new fields faster than someone trained in a skill that's since become obsolete. LinkedIn's workplace learning reports consistently rank communication, collaboration, and adaptability as top employer priorities, often above specific technical certifications.
There's a second, related point worth making: students put too much psychological weight on choosing a major. Treating this decision as permanent, one choice that closes off every other path, creates unnecessary anxiety and often pushes students toward safe, conventional choices. In reality, though, most academic systems allow students to switch majors, add a second one, or pivot entirely through graduate study or self-directed learning. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about one-third of U.S. college students (in four-year programs) change their major at least once, and this flexibility rarely derails their long-term career outcomes. When students see their major as a starting point rather than a life sentence, they're free to choose based on genuine interest and aptitude instead of guessing at future market trends.
One more point deserves scrutiny: the popular idea that formal business education has become unnecessary thanks to online courses and entrepreneurial success stories. Platforms like YouTube and Coursera have certainly made business concepts more accessible. But they rarely offer the structured rigor of financial modeling, accounting principles, or legal frameworks that a formal business education provides. Entrepreneurs who skip this foundation often run into costly gaps, misreading cash flow statements, structuring equity poorly, or misjudging tax obligations, which self-taught content usually doesn't cover in enough depth.
Taken together, these points suggest a clear strategy: choose durability and flexibility over chasing short-term market signals, treat your major as one step in an ongoing educational journey rather than a final destination, and remember that foundational rigor still matters, even for students who plan to skip the traditional career path.
Degrees, skills, and the job market divide
For a long time, the four-year degree served as a stand-in for competence, discipline, and trainability. Employers, unable to evaluate thousands of applicants individually, used degree requirements as a filter, not necessarily because the coursework itself built job-ready skills, but because the credential signaled a baseline level of persistence and cognitive ability. Meanwhile, a competing narrative celebrates the "no-degree path": trade skills, coding bootcamps, and self-taught expertise as legitimate alternatives to a traditional degree.
Both stories contain some truth, but neither tells the whole picture. Degree-optional hiring often remains degree-preferential in practice; internal data from several Fortune 500 companies shows that even after removing formal degree requirements, actual hiring patterns barely changed. At the same time, the no-degree path, while genuinely viable in fields like software development, sales, and skilled trades, tends to hit a ceiling around mid-career, especially for roles that require managing others or working across departments. Without a formal credential, many professionals find themselves stuck just below leadership roles, regardless of their capabilities, because promotion committees and executive search processes still rely heavily on traditional signals like degrees.
What this tells us is that the smarter strategy isn't choosing between having a degree or not. It's recognizing that neither option guarantees lasting relevance without ongoing skill-building. Technical know-how, communication skills, adaptability, and specialized expertise all lose value over time if you stop developing them. A computer science degree from 2010, for instance, tells an employer almost nothing about your familiarity with today's AI tools. The credential opens a door, but it doesn't keep the room behind it open.
For job seekers, this means pursuing a degree where it genuinely removes friction, particularly in fields like law, medicine, or corporate leadership, where credentials still gate entry, while also investing in demonstrable, verifiable skills that outlast any single degree's shelf life. For employers, it means being honest that degree requirements often measure fit with hiring tradition rather than actual ability to do the job.
Making smarter education decisions
Choosing an educational path, whether a graduate program, professional certification, or specialized training, ranks among the most significant investments a person can make, often exceeding $100,000 once you factor in tuition, opportunity costs, and time. Yet many prospective students base this decision mainly on marketing materials, rankings, and admissions presentations, even though the outcome will shape their career for decades. A smarter approach involves talking directly with multiple people involved in the program before committing.
Here's why: institutions naturally have an incentive to tell a favorable story. Admissions departments understandably highlight placement rates, average salaries, and campus amenities, while saying much less about attrition rates, curriculum gaps, or faculty turnover. Talking directly with current students, by contrast, gives you a more honest picture. They can speak to the realities: how heavy the workload actually is, whether academic advising lives up to its promise, and whether the resources the school advertises actually show up when you need them.
Recent graduates bring a different but equally valuable point of view. Since they're closer to the job market, they can speak concretely to how well the program translated into actual employment, whether the credential carried real weight with employers, and how closely the curriculum matched what the job actually required. A graduate three years out can usually tell you which courses were genuinely useful and which ones were mostly theoretical with little real-world application.
Talking to faculty serves a different purpose: to understand the program's intellectual rigor and teaching philosophy. Ask about class sizes, mentorship availability, and how professors balance research with actual teaching. This matters especially in fields where hands-on guidance makes a real difference in how well students develop their skills.
Employers who have hired graduates from a specific program may be the most underused resource of all. Their honest assessment, whether graduates show up prepared, what skill gaps they've noticed, and how much weight the credential carries in hiring decisions, gives you market-tested evidence that institutional statistics simply can't provide. If a program has impressive rankings but employers respond with lukewarm reviews, that's a red flag worth paying attention to.
This kind of research takes more effort than skimming a brochure, but the time investment is small compared to what's at stake. Spending fifteen to twenty hours on these conversations is a modest commitment relative to years of tuition and your future career path.
The bigger lesson here goes beyond any one decision: education choices deserve the same due diligence we'd apply to any major financial investment. Gathering perspectives from students, alumni, faculty, and employers won't guarantee a perfect outcome, but it significantly closes the information gap that too often clouds these high-stakes decisions.
The future of lifelong learning

This shift matters in a few important ways. First, it changes who's responsible for keeping skills current. If learning functions as infrastructure, its upkeep can't rest on individual effort alone; it requires investment from employers, educational institutions, and policymakers. Singapore's SkillsFuture initiative puts this idea into practice: citizens receive recurring credits for approved courses throughout their working lives, an explicit recognition that ongoing retraining benefits everyone, not just the individual managing their own career.
Second, thinking of learning as infrastructure changes how we judge its effectiveness. We evaluate infrastructure by its accessibility, reliability, and interoperability, not by prestige. That means microcredentials, stackable certifications, and employer-sponsored learning programs deserve to be taken just as seriously as traditional degrees. Google's Career Certificates, now accepted by over 150 companies as equivalent to a four-year degree for certain roles, show that this kind of alternative infrastructure is already taking hold.
Third, this shift has real implications for how organizations operate. Companies that treat learning as an afterthought, something reserved for occasional workshops or optional online modules, will likely struggle to keep talent and adapt to a changing market. LinkedIn's Workplace Learning Report consistently finds that opportunities for growth rank among the top reasons employees stay at a company, often mattering more than pay for early- and mid-career professionals.
For individuals, this means budgeting time and money for continuous skill development, just as you'd budget for any other necessity. For institutions, it means building learning pathways into how the organization runs, rather than treating them as an HR side project. For policymakers, it raises real questions about funding, portable benefits, and whether public investment in adult education needs to grow to match its economic importance.
The infrastructure comparison isn't just a turn of phrase. It points to a real shift in how societies need to organize themselves around a simple fact: knowledge itself has become a perishable resource.

As lifelong learning becomes infrastructure rather than an optional extra, the real question isn't whether to pursue education. It's how to build it thoughtfully, staying adaptable in a landscape where certainty itself may be the riskiest bet you can make.
