Praxis Reading FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about the Praxis Core Reading exam.
When do Praxis Reading scores come out?
Praxis Reading scores are available within 7 calendar days after your test date. You can find the date for your test day on the ETS Praxis Exam site.
When should I take the Praxis Reading exam?
To feel adequately prepared for your teaching career, you should take the exam before you begin student teaching and before you start a teaching preparation program.
What is the best way to determine which Praxis test I need to take?
Check with your state's Department of Education or your teacher preparation program to determine which specific Praxis exams are required for your certification.
What are the different types of Praxis exams?
Praxis Reading: Assesses the ability to understand, analyze, and evaluate written passages.
Praxis Writing: Tests your ability to produce effective written responses, including grammar, punctuation, and organization.
Praxis Mathematics: Focuses on basic mathematical concepts, including algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
Praxis Subject Assessments: These are subject-specific tests for specific teaching fields (e.g., elementary education, math, science, English, social studies, etc.).
Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): This exam evaluates your knowledge of pedagogy and your ability to apply teaching concepts.
What is the pass rate of the Praxis Reading exam?
Minimum qualifying Praxis scores are set at the state level. While national pass rates for the Praxis Core exams are not reported, state-specific passing scores can be found on the ETS website.

Should I take the Praxis exam together or separately?
Can I take the Praxis Core exams together or separately?
You can take the Praxis Core tests (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) together or separately. The choice is up to you. Taking them all at once as the combined test costs $150 for all three, against $90 each on their own, or you can take them one at a time and prepare for each in turn.
What are the benefits of taking the combined Praxis exam?
The combined test puts Reading, Writing, and Mathematics in one session, so you register once, pay less, and can finish the Core in a single day. Each test is still scored on its own against your state's passing score, so if you miss one, you can retake that test alone. The cost is a long session: the three tests run 4 hours 35 minutes together, and you need to be ready for all of them at once.
What are the benefits of taking the Praxis exams separately?
Taking the tests separately gives you more time to study for each one. This can be a wise approach if you are new to the material or worried about passing, because you can focus on one subject and become proficient in it before moving on to the next. The drawbacks are time and cost: three separate registrations cost $270, against $150 for the combined test.
How does Achievable support both approaches?
Achievable has a separate course for each Praxis Core test (Reading, Writing, and Math), so you can study one subject at a time whichever way you sit the tests. Our flexible platform adapts to your chosen study approach.
How many times can you take the Praxis Reading exam?
There is no limit on how many times you can take the Praxis exam, but ETS requires you to wait at least 28 days after your test date before retaking the same test. Individual states may add their own retesting requirements on top of that, so check with your state's Department of Education before you rebook.
