If you’ve clicked a “free Praxis Core prep” link on a university resource page and found that it no longer works, you’re not alone. Khan Academy’s Official Praxis Core Prep was the go-to free resource for future teachers, and many programs still link to it, but it was retired in 2024.

The bright side? You still have strong free options, and a clear study plan matters more than any single resource. Here’s what happened, what to use instead, and how to study.

What happened to Khan Academy’s Praxis Core prep

Here’s the short version of what changed and when:

  • What it was: Khan Academy built its Official Praxis Core Prep with ETS, the organization that makes the Praxis tests. It offered free diagnostics, a personalized practice plan, and full-length practice tests for Reading, Writing, and Math.
  • When it ended: ETS announced that Praxis Core Prep would no longer be available on Khan Academy after April 30, 2024.
  • What ETS recommends now: ETS points test takers to Study.com’s Free Praxis Core Prep instead.
  • What’s left: Khan Academy’s Praxis Core videos are still on its Khan Academy Praxis YouTube channel, but the practice questions, diagnostics, and practice tests are gone.

If a resource page sends you to Khan Academy for Praxis Core practice, it’s out of date, so build your plan around the resources below.

Free alternatives: ETS materials and our practice exams

You don’t need to spend money to start preparing. The best free resources come from the test maker and from full-length practice tests.

Free materials from ETS

ETS offers several free resources for each Praxis Core test:

Start with the Study Companion for each test you need, since it shows exactly what the test covers.

Free Achievable practice exams

Our free practice exams match the length and content of each test, and every answer comes with an explanation:

Take one early to see where to focus your time.

Where a full course fits

Free resources show you what the test looks like. A full course helps when you need to relearn the material itself, for example if:

  • it’s been years since you studied algebra, geometry, or grammar rules;
  • your practice scores are well below your state’s passing score;
  • you’ve taken the test before and didn’t pass.

Achievable Praxis Core includes Reading, Writing, and Math courses with 950+ practice questions and essay prompts, three practice exams for each test, an adaptive study plan, and an AI tutor. It costs $199 for all three courses with a full year of access, it comes with a pass guarantee, and the first lessons are free.

How to study for the Praxis Core

A good plan starts with knowing each test’s format, then targeting your weak spots.

Know the format

Each Praxis Core test has its own length and question types:

  • Reading (5713): 56 selected-response questions in 85 minutes, based on passages and short statements.
  • Writing (5723): 40 selected-response questions in 40 minutes, then two 30-minute essays (argumentative and informative/explanatory).
  • Math (5733): 56 selected-response and numeric-entry questions in 90 minutes, with an on-screen four-function calculator.

Each test costs $90, or $150 for all three as the Core Combined test (5752).

Build a study plan

These steps work whether you have two weeks or two months:

  1. Check what you need. Requirements and passing scores vary by state, and some no longer require the Praxis Core: Pennsylvania dropped it for teacher preparation program admission on July 1, 2025. Check ETS’s state requirements and your program’s rules first.
  2. Take a practice test. Use your score to rank the content areas from weakest to strongest.
  3. Study your weakest areas first. Use the Study Companion outline as a checklist, and review must-know math formulas if Math is on your list.
  4. Practice under time limits, and review every mistake. For pacing, try these tips for faster reading comprehension.
  5. Write timed essays. Give yourself 30 minutes per essay, and use our Praxis Core Writing essay tips to check your work.
  6. Leave room for a retake. If you need one, ETS requires you to wait at least 28 days before retaking the same test, so don’t schedule your first attempt right before a deadline.

Short, focused daily sessions beat long cramming sessions.

How to become a teacher

The Praxis Core is one step on a longer path. Requirements vary by state, but for public school teachers, they generally include:

  • a bachelor’s degree, often with a minimum grade point average;
  • a teacher preparation program that includes student teaching with a mentor teacher;
  • passing the required tests, which can include a basic skills test such as the Praxis Core and a test of subject knowledge, such as a Praxis Subject Assessment;
  • passing a background check;
  • applying for a license or certificate for the grade level you’ll teach.

Every state also offers an alternative route for people who already have a bachelor’s degree. Our guides to teacher certification requirements and teacher preparation cover each step in more detail.

Final thoughts

Losing Khan Academy’s free Praxis Core prep was a setback, but it doesn’t have to slow you down. Start with ETS’s Study Companions and a free practice exam, find your weak spots, and build your plan around them, adding a full course if you want more structure. With steady practice, you’ll walk into test day ready and one step closer to your own classroom.
