If I take the TExES PPR, do I still need to take the Praxis exam?

Texas generally uses TExES exams rather than Praxis exams for initial classroom-teacher certification. The Praxis Core tests are a set of teacher certification exams administered by ETS and required for teaching in over 40 states. Qualifying out-of-state certification exams, including applicable Praxis exams, may be considered when TEA determines whether the educator qualifies for an exemption from Texas testing requirements.

Are there subject-specific TExES exams?

Yes: the Texas Education Agency (TEA) offers exams in a number of different subjects, from middle school mathematics to high school chemistry. Depending on the certification being pursued, candidates may need to pass both the PPR and one or more content-area or other required certification exams. The EPP will determine which exams a teacher needs and when they'll be eligible to take them.
