Chapter 1: Text types, purpose, and production

7 sections
  • Core writing basics: No single "right answer" exists, so support claims with reasons, facts, and evidence, and use the 5-20-5 plan for outlining, drafting, and proofreading/revising.
  • Style and formatting: Use statements instead of rhetorical questions, avoid filler and informal diction, introduce authors by full name then last name only, and spell out numbers of one or two words.
  • Essay scoring: Both essays are scored holistically on a single 1–6 scale, with high scores requiring clear focus, strong organization, well-chosen support, and few errors.
  • Argumentative essay: State a position, develop it with the 5-20-5 rule, use a written outline with 2-3 strongest reasons and an acknowledged counterpoint, and end with a brief conclusion.
  • Source-based essay: Identify the most important concerns raised by both sources, explain why they matter, cite both sources whenever paraphrasing or quoting, and organize body paragraphs by concern, not source.

Chapter 2: Language and research skills

21 sections
  • Nouns and gerunds: Nouns affect capitalization and noun-noun agreement, and gerunds are -ing forms that do a noun’s job while taking singular verbs.
  • Pronouns and case: Pronouns must point to one antecedent and match it in number and person, with singular indefinite pronouns taking singular pronouns on the test.
  • Adjectives and agreement: Participles, quantity words, demonstratives, comparatives, and superlatives must match the noun or number they modify, and incorrect forms create errors.
  • Verbs and tense: Simple, progressive, and perfect tenses must stay consistent unless time changes, and modal verbs always take a base verb with no to except ought to.
  • Conjunctions and adverbs: FANBOYS, correlative, and subordinating conjunctions must fit the clause relationship, while conjunctive adverbs need stronger punctuation than a comma alone.
  • Sentence parts and structure: Subjects, clauses, fragments, run-ons, subject-verb agreement, noun-pronoun agreement, and parallel structure depend on finding the true main-clause pattern.
  • Modifiers and comparisons: Misplaced and dangling modifiers distort meaning, and comparison rules require matching like with like, using than, and choosing the correct relative pronoun or clause type.
  • Research and citation: Research writing uses reliable sources, distinguishes objective from subjective material, takes careful notes, and cites paraphrases or quotes in MLA or APA formats.
