Pre-licensing education in California
Since January 1, 2026, California no longer requires 20 hours of pre-licensing education for each line of authority (AB 943).
You still need a one-time, 12-hour course on ethics and the California Insurance Code from a Department-approved provider. It isn't required to take the exam, but it must be finished before your license is issued, so take it alongside your exam prep.
Achievable offers both: this course prepares you for the license exam and covers California's insurance laws, and Achievable's separate 12-hour Insurance Code and Ethics course meets the education requirement.

How to get your California Life & Health license
- Study for the exam, then schedule the Life, Accident and Health or Sickness exam with PSI, online or at a test center.
- Pass the exam with a score of 60% or higher. A passing result is valid for one year.
- Complete the 12-hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course with a Department-approved provider, such as Achievable's.
- Submit your fingerprints through a Live Scan vendor, then apply for your license through Sircon or NIPR.
