Pre-licensing education in California
Since January 1, 2026, California no longer requires 20 hours of pre-licensing education for each line of authority (AB 943).
You still need a one-time, 12-hour course on ethics and the California Insurance Code from a Department-approved provider. It isn't required to take the exam, but it must be finished before your license is issued, so take it alongside your exam prep.

How to get your California Life & Health license
- Study for the exam, then schedule the Life, Accident and Health or Sickness exam with PSI, online or at a test center.
- Pass the exam with a score of 60% or higher. A passing result is valid for one year.
- Complete the 12-hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course with a Department-approved provider.
- Submit your fingerprints through a Live Scan vendor, then apply for your license through Sircon or NIPR.
